Over the past five years, more than 550 electrocution-related fatalities have been reported in Sri Lanka, with approximately 120 deaths recorded in the year 2024 alone. Notably, around 40% of these deaths have been attributed to the Unavailability and Non-functionality of trip switches. The highest number of such incidents has been reported from the Kurunegala and Gampaha police divisions.
Investigations into these fatalities have revealed that most of them were caused due to the absence of trip switches, non-functioning devices, and a lack of public awareness. It has been identified that nearly all of these incidents could have been prevented had a properly functioning trip switch been present at the respective electrical installations.
Taking this serious situation into consideration, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has decided to organize public consultation sessions with the participation of all stakeholders and the general public, with the aim of reducing electrocutions caused by the absence or malfunctioning of trip switches.
Further details regarding this initiative can be found in the consultation paper available for download on the official website of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka.
All stakeholders and the public are invited to actively participate in these sessions and to contribute their views, suggestions, recommendations, and proposed solutions.
